Cocker Spaniels - Information - Historical Summary
Cocker Spaniels originated in England about the 1800s. Arguing concerning the ancestors of Cockers is still going on. Some claim that Spaniels appeared during the Roman invasions. Others insist that the true roots of the breed should be sought in Spain.
Whichever the truth is, English Cocker Spaniels are rather old dogs that have been known for years on the continent. They were reputed for their perfect hunting qualities and relatively easy upkeep. Owners and hunters have noticed the breed's liking for hunting a woodcock, a small bird of grayish color. It is only natural that the breed was named "Cocker."
The Cocker's hunting qualities did not go unnoticed for American dog fanciers. However, they tried to adjust the breed to native environment and hunting needs. As the result, the Cocker Spaniel's size was diminished some. British breeders, the fathers of the Cocker breed, did not favor the tendency to change the original appearance of the Cocker Spaniel. Consequently, two breeds exhibiting specific traits emerged. Nowadays, American and English Cocker Spaniels occupy a fitting niche in the canine world.
Cocker Spaniels - Information - Distribution around the World
Cocker Spaniels have been extremely popular across Europe and the US. According to the AKC statistics, the American Cocker Spaniel has been on top numerous times. In 1936, the breed became number one in the United States. Its popularity is still evident.
English Cockers are particularly loved in Australia. It is interesting to know that the dog has been a top-20 breed in the country. Since the English Cocker Spaniel has preserved most of its hunting qualities, it keeps on going as one of the popular Hound dogs in Europe. Great Britain bears the palm in breeding quality English Cockers. Numerous kennels around the world can boast having imported some dogs from British breeding lines. Some English Cockers were imported to Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century. However, they were not registered until the year 1922. In the subsequent years, the number of English Spaniels in Argentina grew very slowly. It will suffice to say that by 1932 there were only 23 purebred dogs in the country.
Yet, the Argentinean Kennel Club tried to improve the situation and was rather instrumental in promoting the breed. Selective breeding took place along with some dogs brought from England. The middle of the century can be said to be the climax of the breed's development in Argentina. Numerous kennels throughout the country anticipated the foundation of the Argentinean Club of English Cocker Spaniel (1960).
The population of the English Cocker Spaniel in Argentina continued to grow in the 1970s. Nowadays, breed fanciers go on working on its breeding and improvement. Even though unstable economic situations make it particularly hard to show the English Cocker Spaniel, true lovers achieve considerable success.
Cocker Spaniels - Information - Brazilian Mystery
The appearance of Cocker Spaniels in Brazil remains a mystery. According to some sources, the first English Cocker Spaniel was brought to the country as early as the 19th century. However, there is no written evidence to prove this theory. Hence, most researches are inclined to believe that the breed appeared in Brazil much later. It could have happened about 1940-1960s.
Popularization of the Cocker Spaniel started after Celia Dornelle, an adherent of the breed, brought some dogs from England. Their descendents turned out to be National Champions later. In a few decades, Brazil became one of the leading countries in breeding English Cockers. Thus, in spite of a cloudy appearance of the breed in Brazil, Cocker Spaniels belong in the top 10 most popular breeds in the country.
