Among the diseases commonly associated with Cocker Spaniels are PRA, cataracts, patellar luxation, and some others. Certain health disorders are often linked to coat color. Thus, parti-colored Cockers tend to suffer from deafness more frequently than solids. The latter, in their turn, are susceptible to CHD (Canine Hip Dysplasia). Breeding from poor lines with no consideration of the dog's genetics can lead to disillusionment on the part of the breeder and sufferings on the part of the owner and an affected Cocker.
Education should be followed by a number of tests that reveal the presence of this or that disease in a dog. Both parent dogs should be tested for hereditary eye disorders about once a year. Hearing tests are also to be carried out when breeding Cocker Spaniels. The OFA (the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) recommends x-raying stock dogs at the age of two years old.

During pregnancy, a female Cocker needs a special diet to maintain its health. It is interesting to note that the ration of food that a bitch requires does not change greatly during the first weeks of pregnancy. It is in the last few weeks when the amount of food should be increased to about 150%. It will help to fulfill the needs of both the mother and her puppies.
Cocker puppies should be socialized properly and housetrained. Since Cockers can be particularly hard to housetrain, this problem deserves much attention. Crate training is recommended for little Cocker Spaniels.
