Black Cocker Spaniel Puppy

A black Cocker Spaniel puppy is not difficult to find, as solid black is the second most common coat color in Cocker Spaniels behind buff. The black in such dogs should be jet. Lighter shading is not desirable. Black Cocker Spaniel dogs often have readily visible tan points located in certain areas.

To correspond to the breed standard, a pointed black Cocker Spaniel puppy should have tan points over each eye, on the cheeks and on the sides of the muzzle, on the ears, on the legs or feet, and under the tail. On the chest and throat, tan points are optional. Lack of tan points in specified locations and presence of markings in other locations are serious faults that disqualify the dog from the show ring. White markings are allowed in black Cocker Spaniels if they are located on the chest and throat only.

When choosing a dog, there are many things to take into consideration besides the coat color. A black Cocker Spaniel puppy should be registered by one of the kennel clubs or registries and correspond to the breed standard to participate in shows for purebreds. Breed standards differ slightly in various registries, but the main characteristics of the breed are constant. The ideal size for the Cocker Spaniel male is 15 inches at the withers; for females it’s 14 inches. The weight of these dogs is 18 to 28 pounds. The body length should slightly exceed the wither height. The head should be well proportionate, chiseled and refined. The eyes should be large and round-shaped, the darker the better. The ears in Cocker Spaniels are long and feathered, like in all spaniels. The nose should have well developed nostrils. The nose color should match the eye color. The lower jaw should be covered by the upper lip.

The personality of a quality dog should be balanced, with no sight of timidity. Like all Sporting dogs, Cocker Spaniels are very active and eager to work. Developed for work, these dogs are not happy indoors if not given an outlet to their energy. Prior to buying a black Cocker Spaniel puppy, make sure you have enough time to devote to an active and playful pet.
